  • Beautiful Death Vase
This piece is a vase that I am working on called, "The Beautiful Death". It is a philosophical vase which honors and celebrates the death of the rose. A red rose is placed on a small needle in the bottom of the sculpture to support the stem. Then as the water in the black sand evaporates, the rose slowly and gracefully dies. As the flower dies, its head is lightly caught and cradled in the top end of the vase. It is much like being born in your coffin really. The beings' fate is already predetermined and therefore inevitable. I created this to show that death has its own beauty and it can be just as amazing as life itself. It shows that death should not be feared, it is merely the final adventure on everyones list.

  • Honda CM400C Build
Before the summer of 2011, I knew little to nothing about how a motorcycle worked and what went into making one. I decided I was going to learn everything about motorcycles, so I dove head first into this project. My first purchase was "Motorcycles For Dummies" and my second purchase was the frame of this bike. I worked on this tirelessly in my garage for 3 months of late nights and early mornings. I got to know this bike inside and out, learning everything that goes into an engine, transmission, clutch, fuel systems, carburetors, exhaust systems, electrical systems, suspension, restoration, painting, and welding. The project was overall a huge success and learning experience.

  • Moon Suit at Atelier Van Lieshout
These are shots that our photographer at AVL took of the project we made for the Dutch Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. This was easily my favorite experience of the entire internship there, because for this project I got to work side-by-side with Joep. His idea for these "apocalypse suits" was basically to create a homemade suit to protect someone from a toxic gas threat. We made a total of 2 of these suits, one was Joep's and one was mine. Little did I know that he was actually going to put me in the suit to photograph it. That was truly an experience to finally work with him on a project. I even think he liked me, which I found out to be a good thing and a bad thing. It's good because he was my boss and I could learn a lot from him, and it was bad because it was Joep!!! and whenever he needed anything crazy to be done, I was the one that did it and didn't complain. I remember that at one point in this project he wanted to sculpt a torso/waist out of styrofoam. So he said to me, "Go get a big piece of foam." I went over and the last piece of styrofoam we had was a full piece measuring about a 1 meter cube. He said, "I need half of that. Wait here." Then he runs (literally runs) into the back of the workshop and comes back with a chainsaw screaming in his hands. Then he says to me, "Hold it up while I cut it in half. Hold still." At this point everyone in the studio stopped to watch. I think they all wanted to see Joep cut an intern in half, but it didn't happen that day.
